Get the cheesesteak experience if you’ve never done it before. Pat’s and Gino’s are fine (get Pat’s), but it’s definitely a tourist spot. My recommendation would be a cheesesteak with sharp provolone from John’s Roast Pork.
I'm actually going to be in Philly on Friday night for a concert at the TLA.

If the cheese didn’t come out of a can it ain’ t a Philly cheesesteak experience.

You mean Center City?
Go to Reading Terminal, try to take in a museum. If you’re going to Olde City and doing the historic stuff, try to get to Penn’s Landing and get on one of the ships. Wave to me, I’ll be at the federal building next to the liberty bell.
Be wary of what’s around you after dark, the city is getting rough (at least compared to when I was a kid).

Where will you be in the city, do you know?
I will second Chuckles’s suggestion of John’s Roast Pork if you’re getting a Cheesesteak. Pat’ s and Gino’s are fine, but that’s about it. Tony Luke’s isn’t too bad either.
If your feeling cultured, the Philadelphia Art museum is a good place to visit.
If you want a place to walk around where the pace is a little slower, go to the Navy Yard. Just keep following Broad street until you can’t go anymore.

Don't get either, they suck. Cheese wiz is absolutely overrated. I have had cheesteaks that were 100x better from random pizza joints in NJ. Just find a well rated pizza/sub shop someplace in Philly that uses real cheese and quality meat and the cheesesteak will be much better!

I’d recommend checking out Barcade. That’s the actual name of the place, regardless of how generic that name is. It’s a pretty chill place and it was cheap as hell to get a few beers and play some classic games. Went to a really ghetto and shitty hookah bar afterwards but not much else was open at 2am lol. Philly isn't too sketchy in most areas but there's definitely some neighborhoods that are questionable at night to walk around. Good food in general and I like the vibe of that city. Good music scene too.

Try not to die.
Time for a quick Philly story: The day after I got discharged from the Navy my friends and I drove to NYC for a concert. We got there at 11 AM, spent the whole day drinking, I don’t remember any of the concert, and then I awoke at 2 AM in Philly, where I wolfed down 2 whole cheesesteaks, one from Pats and one from Ginos.
As for things to do, you could go see a national historic landmark, the SS United States! I used to work for the company that designed her. S he’s moored at Pier 82 off Columbus Blvd.

I disagree. There are absolutely better cheesesteak options, but Pat's is still good. My sister lives around the corner from there, so I probably walk over there once a year a get one. Not the best cheesesteak, but still good.

Not that I would partake but the real Philly sandwich experience is a roast pork & broccoli rabe.

John's Roast Pork also makes a great one of those.

As a south jersey resident, I can’t argue with your assessment. For whatever reason, local pizza joints just make a better cheesesteak. I’ve always been particular to Gaetano’s.

John's Roast Pork also makes a breakfast cheesesteak. They just scramble some eggs into it. Pretty much just steak and eggs on a roll. It's great after a night out on the town.

You'll be near Chinatown. Lots of good food there, although I'd defer to someone else to tell you which place is the best. I'm pretty sure I'll be grabbing dinner there Friday night before we go to a concert. Speaking of which, Bayside is playing Friday night at the TLA. If that's your sort of music, tickets are still available.

That’s just south Penn’s Landing, probably a $10 cab ride or 4 mile walk from where you’ll be.

All the Revolutionary tourist stuff is about 6 blocks east of there, that’d be my first stop. When I was a kid, I enjoyed the Franklin Institute (science center) and Natural History Museum, as well -- those are several blocks west.

I don’t drink at all, which is why I like going to retro arcades . Definitely much less weird to be the one person not having a drink when there are video games to play.

It's the same as people who swear by American cheese on cheeseburgers. Damn I do not want that crappy cheese product on anything! Some pepperjack or Swiss or cheddar just depending on the other toppings or my mood. Mmmmm

oh cool, sounded like bar stuff. I will check it out. It occurred to me this morning that my job wont even start until late tonight. I have no idea why I got here yesterday other than I wasn’t the one making the reservations.

It’s better than showing up when you are needed but not being allowed in the building or on site until the day you are supposed to leave due to paperwork and being stuck in limbo multiple days. Ask me how that is..
